Reverse description An owl, the sacred bird of Athena and symbol of Athens, stands erect in three-quarter view facing right atop an overturned panathenaic amphora. A crescent moon and the ethnic legend ΑΘΕ appear prominently in the field, with magistrates' names inscribed in two vertical columns flanking the central device: ΗΛΙ-ΕΠΙ to the left and ΟΔΩ-ΓΕΝΗ to the right, with ΣΩΣΑΝ-ΔΡΟΣ below. An olive spray and additional control symbols occupy the surrounding field. The composition is characteristic of the Athenian New Style tetradrachm series inaugurated circa 166 BC.
