| Obverse description | Diademed head of Mithradates VI Eupator facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic portrait tradition with idealising features recalling the imagery of Alexander the Great and Herakles. The hair is long, luxuriantly curled and swept back from the forehead in wild, flame-like locks. A diadem encircles the head, its ends trailing behind. A coiled serpent is visible behind the neck, serving as a divine attribute associating the king with Dionysos and underscoring his semi-divine pretensions. The portrait is executed in high relief with exceptional sculptural quality. |
