Obverse description Diademed effigy of Mithradates VI Eupator in high-relief right-facing profile, his youthful, idealized features rendered in the Hellenistic royal portrait tradition. The king wears a simple royal diadem binding his abundant, wildly tousled curly hair, which cascades in thick, serpentine locks around his neck and temples. The portrait is executed with exceptional artistry, conveying both regal authority and the quasi-divine heroic character the king cultivated in emulation of Alexander the Great. The field is otherwise plain, the flan broad and well-struck, allowing the bold portraiture to dominate the design.
