| Obverse description | Diademed and youthful bare-headed portrait bust of Mithridates VI Eupator facing right, rendered in the idealized Hellenistic royal tradition with pronounced features and a deeply engraved, flowing mass of wild, curly hair swept back from the forehead. The diadem is tied at the nape of the neck with trailing ends visible behind the head. The portrait is executed with exceptional artistic refinement, combining the heroic idealism of Alexander the Great's portraiture with individualizing physiognomic traits. A coiled serpent or staff element is partially visible to the left in the field. |
