| Reverse description | A large eagle stands facing, head turned to the left, wings spread wide, perched on a small globe or thunderbolt. The eagle, a quintessential symbol of Roman imperial power and divine favor, dominates the reverse field. The surrounding Greek legend, distributed around the periphery of the coin, records Macrinus's tribunician power, consulship, and title of Father of the Nation. The type closely follows the standard reverse design used for Syrian tetradrachms of this period, as catalogued under Prieur 1678. |

| Additional information |
Macrinus ruled for just fourteen months — the first emperor never to have served in the Senate and the first of Moorish origin — before being defeated by the forces of Elagabalus at the Battle of Antioch in June 218. His coinage is consequently scarce across all mints, and provincial issues like those of Caesarea Maritima were struck in a narrow window before the mint realigned to the new Severan claimant. Prieur 1678 is among the less frequently encountered of his Caesarean types.
