| Obverse description | Diademed head of the deified Alexander the Great facing right, portrayed with the ram's horn of Ammon curling behind his ear, a divine attribute associating him with Zeus-Ammon. The hair is rendered in thick, deeply cut curling locks arranged with great naturalistic vitality, characteristic of the finest Hellenistic die-cutting. The portrait fills the flan with commanding presence, with no legend or border inscription on this face. The skin surface is smooth and idealized, contrasting with the dynamic treatment of the hair. |
