Additional information

Maroneia, the Thracian coastal city whose wine was famous enough to appear in the Odyssey, issued this tetradrachm during a period of significant political instability in the northern Aegean — the decades following Sparta's forced dissolution of the Chalcidian League in 379 BC reshuffled regional power considerably, and Maroneia's coinage reflects the city asserting its own commercial identity against that turbulence. The magistrate name Kallikrates appearing on this issue is one of several known from the series, helping numismatists establish a rough sequential chronology within the type.
