Obverse description Youthful bare head of Heracles facing right, depicted beardless in the Hellenistic tradition, enveloped in the Nemean lion-skin headdress whose scalp and knotted forepaws are rendered in fine relief. The physiognomy subtly evokes a portrait of Alexander the Great, a convention standard to this coinage type. The modeling of the facial features, curling locks of hair at the temple, and the naturalistic treatment of the ear reflect accomplished die-cutting in the late Hellenistic style characteristic of the Phaselis mint.
