Struck posthumously in Alexander's name, this piece dates to the generation-long scramble among the Diadochi — his successors — who continued issuing Alexander-type coinage partly for its unmatched commercial credibility across the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. Price 811 places this issue within the Amphipolis mint sequence, one of the most prolific producers of posthumous Alexanders during the wars of the successors.
Martin Price's 1991 corpus remains the definitive reference for distinguishing these issues by die linkage and control marks, since regnal attribution is impossible without them.
