| Reverse description | Head of the nymph Arethusa in right-facing profile, her hair elaborately coiffed and bound with a pearl sphendone, with individual strands rendered in fine parallel lines; she wears a round earring. The head is encircled by four dolphins swimming around it, arranged to fill the field symmetrically. The Greek legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ is distributed among the dolphins in the surrounding field. The style is that of the early Syracusan coinage, displaying an archaic severity in the facial features combined with careful attention to decorative detail in the hair treatment. |
