| Reverse description | Head of the nymph Arethusa facing right, her hair bound in a beaded tainia and adorned with a necklace, set within a circular border formed by four dolphins swimming around the periphery. The ethnic legend ΣYRAKOΣIΩN, with the characteristic archaic retrograde nu (Ν rendered as И) and Latin-form upsilon (V), is distributed in four segments between the dolphins. The portrait is rendered in the refined early Classical manner associated with the coinages of Syracuse under Hieron I. |
