| Obverse description | A sphinx seated left occupies the central field, depicted with a human female head rendered in profile with carefully striated hair, prominent folded wings with detailed feathering, and a leonine body with haunches drawn up and tail curling upward to the right. The creature's head is turned to face left, conveying an archaic dignity characteristic of late 5th- to early 4th-century Chian coinage. To the left of the sphinx stands an amphora surmounted by a bunch of grapes, serving as the distinctive civic badge of Chios. The relief is bold and finely modelled, with the irregular flan typical of hand-struck silver of this period. No legend appears on the obverse. |
