Obverse description A griffin couchant to left occupies the central field, its right forepaw raised in a heraldic gesture; the creature is rendered with fine detail including folded wings, leonine haunches, and an eagle's beak and head. The city ethnic ΑΒΔΗ is inscribed in the upper field and ΡΙΤΕΩΝ along the lower exergual area, together forming the civic legend of Abdera. The type, long associated with the coinage of Abdera, reflects the city's emblematic use of the griffin as a symbol of guardianship and civic identity. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, characteristic of Thracian silver issues of the late Classical period.
