Demetrius Poliorcetes issued this coinage following his seizure of the Macedonian throne in 294 BC, a kingship he held through ruthless political maneuvering after engineering the death of Alexander V. His reign lasted only six years before his own troops starved him into surrender while campaigning against Pyrrhus and Lysimachus simultaneously. The issues of this period were struck at multiple mints across his shrinking domain as he struggled to fund campaigns on collapsing fronts.
Newell's sequencing places this emission relatively late in the series, circa 290 BC, when Demetrius still controlled Pella.
