Demetrius I Poliorcetes seized Macedonia in 294 BC after murdering Alexander V, but his reign lasted barely five years before his own troops deserted him en masse to Pyrrhus of Epirus and Lysimachus of Thrace. This Pella issue dates to the final collapse — struck 289–288 BC, just months before Demetrius surrendered to Seleucus I in 285 BC and died in captivity. The coins of his Macedonian period are notably rarer than his earlier Asiatic issues, reflecting both the brevity of his hold on the kingdom and the disruption to mint operations as his authority disintegrated.
