Obverse description Nike alighting left upon the prow of a warship (aphlaston visible at stern), her wings spread and billowing drapery conveying dynamic movement. In her outstretched right hand she raises a long naval trumpet (salpinx), while her left hand holds a stylis (steering oar). The ship's prow is rendered in detail with oar-ports and ram, occupying the lower portion of the field. The composition is set without border or legend, the entire surface devoted to this celebrated and innovative design commemorating Demetrius's naval victories.
