| Reverse description | Nike, the goddess of victory, stands facing right with her left foot resting on the base of a column, upon which rests a shield. She holds a stylus in her raised right hand and inscribes the regnal date letters L A upon the face of the shield. The composition is a common Alexandrian type denoting the first regnal year, rendered in the compact, utilitarian style characteristic of Roman provincial billon tetradrachms of the third century. |

| Additional information |
Claudius II died of plague in 270 AD after roughly two years on the throne — an unusually short reign that nonetheless produced a substantial Alexandrian coinage, the Egyptian mint running continuously under Roman imperial administration. His death triggered an immediate and politically calculated posthumous deification, with the Senate voting him divine honors almost before the body was cold, partly to legitimize his successor Aurelian.
The plague that killed him, the Plague of Cyprian, had been decimating the empire for nearly two decades by this point.
