Reverse description A cult statue of Divus Augustus, togate and standing, holding a patera in his right hand and a long sceptre in his left, mounted upon a processional cart (carpentum) drawn left by four elephants, each attended by its mahout-rider seated upon the animal's neck. Seven stars are scattered across the field, emphasizing the divine status of Augustus. The composition alludes to the triumph and deification of the first emperor, a theme promoted by Caligula to legitimize his own dynastic authority.
