| Obverse description | Sphinx seated to left in three-quarter profile, with outstretched feathered wings curving prominently above the leonine body; the human head is rendered with fine detail, wearing a wreath or diadem. To the left of the sphinx stands an amphora surmounted by a bunch of grapes, serving as the civic symbol of Chios. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, with the design executed in high relief characteristic of Chian coinage of the early fourth century BC. The field is plain and unlettered. |
