Additional information

Attambelos I founded the Characene dynasty at Charax Spasinu, a port city at the head of the Persian Gulf originally built by Alexander and later rebuilt by Antiochus IV. His kingdom occupied a strategic bottleneck in the overland and maritime trade routes between the Parthian empire and India, which explains both why the Parthians tolerated its existence and why it produced coinage at all — civic identity and commercial credibility were inseparable at this entrepôt. The BMC Greek attribution places this among the earliest documented issues of the dynasty.
