Obverse description Sphinx seated left in profile upon a shallow convex surface, rendered in the archaic Ionian style. To the left of the sphinx, a grape bunch hangs above an amphora, both serving as civic symbols of Chios. The overall design is contained within a slightly convex flan, characteristic of early Classical Chian coinage. The sphinx, a long-standing emblem of Chios, is depicted with folded wings and a naturalistic leonine body.
