Obverse description Youthful heroic head of Herakles facing right, wearing the scalp of the Nemean lion as a headdress, the lion's mane rendered in careful relief with detailed feathering at the neck. The portrait displays strong, idealized features characteristic of late Classical Greek die-engraving, with a prominent brow, straight nose, and slightly parted lips. No legend appears on the obverse field, which is otherwise plain. The overall style reflects the accomplished craftsmanship of the Amphipolis mint, one of the primary issuing authorities under Alexander III.
