| Obverse description | Macedonian horseman advancing to the left, depicted bareback and in full stride atop a prancing horse. The rider, clad in a short chiton and chlamys, holds two hunting spears diagonally across his body in a commanding martial posture. The composition fills the field with vigorous energy characteristic of early Macedonian die engraving. The entire design is framed within a beaded border, the flan retaining the irregular fabric typical of early fifth-century BC hammered silver coinage. |

Alexander I spent much of his reign navigating Macedonian submission to Persia — including personally hosting Xerxes' army during the 480 BC invasion — while quietly supplying intelligence to the Greek allies. The Athenians later awarded him the title "Philhellene" partly in recognition of this double game. These tetradrachms were struck in the immediate aftermath of Persian withdrawal, when Macedonian control over the silver-rich Mt. Pangaion mining district was being reasserted and coin production could resume on Macedonian terms.
