Mende was one of the wealthiest poleis on the Chalcidice peninsula, drawing its prosperity almost entirely from wine exports — Mendean wine was among the most commercially valued in the Aegean world during the fifth century BC. The city's coinage circulated widely as a trade instrument rather than a purely civic one, moving through the same commercial networks that carried its amphorae into Egypt, the Black Sea littoral, and the Levant.
The period this piece spans saw Mende navigate the catastrophic upheavals of the Peloponnesian War, including a revolt against Athens in 423 BC that Cleon's successor Nicias was dispatched to suppress.
