Obverse description Dionysos, heavily inebriated, reclines leftward upon the back of a donkey walking to the right, his body draped loosely as he clutches a kantharos in one hand. To the right of the group, Silenos stands facing right, holding a thyrsos upright. The composition is rendered in high relief in the vigorous archaic-to-early classical style characteristic of Mendean coinage, with expressive figural work conveying the Dionysiac revelry central to the city's iconographic program. The field is plain, with no legend on the obverse.
