Additional information

Messana's coinage from this period reflects the city's turbulent position during the final decade of Athenian involvement in Sicily. The catastrophic Athenian expedition of 415–413 BC ended with the near-total destruction of the expeditionary force at Syracuse, reshuffling power across the island. Messana, which had refused the Athenians entry during the campaign, emerged from the conflict in a strengthened diplomatic posture — and coinages of this type coincide precisely with that window of relative stability before Carthaginian pressure resumed from the west.

The die linkages recorded across Caltabiano 623–624 suggest continuous but not prolific output from a single working period.
