| Reverse description | A bounding hare leaps to the right in dynamic fashion, its body rendered with fluid, naturalistic energy characteristic of the finest Sicilian die-engravers of the early classical period. Beneath the hare, a dolphin swims to the right, serving as both a marine symbol and a reference to the Strait of Messina over which the city presided. The ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΩΝ is distributed around the inner border, partially visible between the beaded inner circle and the coin's irregular flan edge. The reverse design as a whole conveys the civic identity of Messana through its fauna and maritime symbolism. |
