Reverse description Left-facing head of the nymph Arethusa in high relief, her hair bound in a sakkos and adorned with an ampyx inscribed with the abbreviated engraver's signature ΦΡΥ (for Phrygillos). Four dolphins swim in a circular arrangement around the central portrait, framing it within the field. The encircling ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ identifies the issuing city. The portrait displays the refined modeling and individualized treatment characteristic of the signed master engravers working at Syracuse in the late fifth century BC.
