Reverse description Athena standing in three-quarter view to the right, depicted in full figure wearing a crested helmet, aegis, and flowing chiton, holding an upright spear in her right hand and a large round shield in her left, the shield face decorated with a Gorgoneion. In the upper left field, an olive branch; in the lower field, an owl standing to the left, a traditional Athenian symbol. The entire design is contained within a shallow incuse square, a hallmark of early Greek coinage technique. The abbreviated ethnic inscription ΣΑ appears in the field, identifying the issuing city of Samos.
