| Reverse description | A spreading grapevine, rendered in bold relief, occupies the central field, its branching tendrils bearing five heavy clusters of grapes suspended at various intervals across the design. The vine's trunk rises from the base and extends laterally in a stylized yet naturalistic manner, evoking the Dionysiac associations of the city of Mende, renowned in antiquity for its wine production. The entire design is enclosed within a shallow incuse square, as is typical of early Greek coinage produced by the hammered technique. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is disposed around the vine within the incuse square, identifying the issuing city. |
