Reverse description The celebrated silphium plant, emblem of Kyrene and its principal export commodity, rendered in full frontal view filling the field: a tall central stalk with a prominent heart-shaped or umbellate flowering head at the apex, flanked by pairs of spreading lateral branches each terminating in globular seed or fruit clusters, and broad lanceolate leaves springing from the base. The bold, deeply incuse relief and schematic naturalism of the design are hallmarks of Cyrenean coinage of the early fourth century BC. The Greek ethnic legend KYRАНА is distributed in the fields around the plant.
