| Obverse description | Dionysos, inebriated and wearing a chiton draped from the waist, reclines leftward upon the back of a donkey walking right; the god holds a kantharos in his right hand, resting it upon his right knee, with his head turned to face right. A bird is perched rightward upon a branch positioned before the group. The composition is rendered in the archaic-transitional style characteristic of Mendean coinage, conveying the dionysiac theme with notable narrative detail and animation. |
