Obverse description A slow biga drawn by a pair of mules advances to the right, guided by a charioteer who holds the reins and a kentron (goad). The composition reflects the refined Sicilian die-engraving tradition of the late fifth century BC. In the exergue, two dolphins are depicted swimming snout-to-snout, a maritime emblem characteristic of Messanian coinage. The ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΑ appears in the field in Greek characters.
