| Obverse description | An eagle depicted in flight to the right, rendered in bold archaic style with finely striated wing feathers and a powerful curved beak. The bird clutches a writhing serpent firmly in both its talons and beak, a motif emblematic of Chalkis. The composition fills the flan with vigorous naturalism characteristic of early fifth-century BC Euboian coinage, with the eagle's spread wings dominating the field. The surfaces show crisp high relief typical of the finest Chalkidian die-cutting of the period. |
