| Obverse description | A biga drawn by two walking mules advances to the right, guided by the fully draped figure of the nymph Messana, who serves as charioteer. She holds a goad in her raised right hand while managing the reins with both hands. The scene is rendered in high relief with careful attention to the musculature of the animals and the flowing drapery of the figure, characteristic of the Sicilian engraving tradition of the late fifth century BC. The ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣ-ΑΝΑ is inscribed in the field. |
