| Obverse description | Facing lion's scalp rendered in high relief, with the mane depicted in bold, deeply engraved radiating strands flowing outward around the entire periphery of the flan. The facial features are rendered with striking naturalism, including prominent closed eyes, a broad flattened muzzle, and a central facial groove. The design fills the flan completely, occupying the full field in the archaic Greek artistic tradition characteristic of Samian coinage of the late fifth to early fourth century BC. |
