Obverse description Inebriated Dionysos reclines supine upon the back of a walking ass, his figure rendered in a lively, archaic style. The god is shown with head facing the viewer, his body sprawled loosely across the animal's back in a posture conveying intoxication. In his outstretched hands he holds a kantharos and a thyrsos, emblems of his divine nature. The ass moves to the right across the field, its form rendered with characteristic early Classical naturalism. The composition fills the broad flan and reflects the celebrated artistic ambition of Mendean coinage in this period.
