| Reverse description | Within a shallow linear incuse square, a sinuous grapevine spreads across the field bearing four prominent clusters of grapes depending from its curling tendrils and foliage, rendered in raised relief against the recessed background. The vine is depicted with naturalistic vitality, its branches curving organically to fill the square compartment. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is disposed around the border of the incuse square, with individual letters placed in each corner and along the sides. The overall composition is characteristic of the two-square incuse technique employed by Mende, with an inner raised square framing the vine motif. The bold rendering of the grapevine alludes directly to the city's renowned wine production and its devotion to Dionysos. |
