| Obverse description | Dionysus reclines left upon the back of a walking mule, his body rendered in a relaxed, symposiastic pose; he extends his right hand to hold a cantharus while his left hand rests upon the animal's flank. A crow perches upon a plant situated before the mule. The scene is executed in fine archaic Greek style, the composition filling the broad flan with fluid, naturalistic detail. |

| Reverse description | Within a shallow incuse square of linear border, a sinuous grapevine issues centrally, its undulating stem bearing four clusters of grapes arranged across the field, rendered in fine relief against the recessed background. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ appears in Greek characters distributed around the outer margin of the incuse square, identifying the issuing city of Mende. The overall design is characteristic of the bold, confident style of fifth-century Macedonian coinage. |
