Reverse description A hare in full spring to the right, its body powerfully rendered with elongated hind legs thrust backward, capturing the animal's swift motion in high relief. The Greek ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΟΝ is inscribed in the field, identifying the issuing city of Messana on the northeastern tip of Sicily. The reverse type of the leaping hare was a distinctive emblem of Messana and recurs consistently across the city's coinage of this period. The die work is characteristic of the early Classical style, with a bold and naturalistic treatment of the animal form.
