Obverse description Facing left, the bearded head of Dionysus rendered in high relief, with strongly modelled features including a prominent brow, full curling beard, and sensuously parted lips. The deity is crowned with a wreath of ivy leaves and berries, rendered with fine naturalistic detail characteristic of early fourth-century Thasian engraving. The hair falls in thick, voluminous locks behind the neck, filling the field to the coin's edge. The portrait exhibits the vigorous, expressive style associated with the Thasian die-cutting tradition of the early Classical period.
