| Obverse description | The eponymous nymph Messana depicted as a charioteer, holding a kentron in her left hand and reins in both hands, driving a slow biga of mules to the right in a stately procession. The legend MEΣ-ΣANA is inscribed retrograde in a counterclockwise arrangement around the field. In the exergue, two dolphins are shown confronted, face to face, serving as a symbolic reference to Messana's prominent maritime identity. |
