The Derrones were a Macedonian tribal people whose coinage represents some of the earliest and most distinctive silver struck in the northern Aegean region. Their tetradrachms are notable for their unusually heavy fabric relative to contemporary Thraco-Macedonian issues, and the series has been the subject of significant scholarly debate over precisely which tribe the name designates and where the mint actually operated — questions that remain only partially resolved.
Hoards containing Derrones issues have turned up alongside coins of the Bisaltai and Orreskioi, suggesting these tribes operated within overlapping commercial networks, likely tied to the silver-rich mines of the Strymon basin.
