Obverse description The god Dionysus, depicted as an elderly, bearded figure wearing an ivy wreath and himation, reclines upon the back of a walking mule facing left. In his raised right hand he holds a cantharus, while his left arm rests languidly upon the animal's hindquarters. Before the mule, a bird perches upon a flowering plant in the lower left field. The composition is rendered in a robust archaic-to-early classical style, with careful attention to the naturalistic posture of the mule and the dignified repose of the deity.
