Obverse description Inebriated Dionysos reclines leftward upon the back of a donkey walking to the right, rendered in a confident archaic-to-early-classical style. The god wears a chiton draped loosely about his waist and raises a kantharos in his right hand, resting it upon his right knee in a posture conveying divine revelry. The composition conveys dynamic naturalism rare in fifth-century BC provincial coinage. A barley grain appears in the exergue, referencing Mende's agricultural prosperity. The field is plain, with the irregular flan characteristic of hand-struck Macedonian silver.
