Rhegion — modern Reggio Calabria — occupied a position of unusual strategic tension during this decade, caught between Athenian imperial ambitions in the west and the aggressive expansion of Syracuse. The city had signed a treaty with Athens in 433/2 BC, and Athenian forces used Rhegion as a staging point during the disastrous Sicilian Expedition of 415–413 BC. These tetradrachms were almost certainly circulating money during that campaign.
The series to which this piece belongs is well documented across the major reference collections — Lloyd, Jameson, Lockett, de Luynes — suggesting reasonably consistent survival, though individual die marriages within HN Italy 2488 vary considerably in rarity.
