| Reverse description | Two eagles are depicted standing to the right upon the carcass of a hare laid across a rocky outcrop, a design emblematic of Akragas and associated with the city's cult of Zeus. The nearer eagle stands with wings closed and head raised in a posture of triumph, while the farther eagle spreads its wings and bends its head downward to tear at the prey. The scene is rendered with exceptional naturalistic detail and dramatic tension, hallmarks of the celebrated die-engravers working in Sicily during this period. The ethnic legend of the city encircles the design in the field. |
