| Obverse description | Facing the obverse, a large and naturalistic silphium plant occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with characteristic detail. The plant displays a thick central stalk rising from a bulbous root, flanked by two lateral branches each bearing rounded seed-pods and curling leaf formations typical of the celebrated Cyrenaic silphium. The Greek legend ΚΥΑΡΑΝ is distributed around the plant in the field, with individual letter groups placed between the branches. The composition is bold and emblematic, reflecting the paramount economic and cultural significance of silphium to the city of Kyrene. |
