Obverse description Right-facing bust of Francis I in high relief, portraying the king in Renaissance fashion with a broad-brimmed crown or bonnet adorned with floral or foliate motifs, shoulder-length hair rendered in fine parallel strokes, and a lace-collared doublet visible at the truncation. The effigy is boldly modelled in the Italian-influenced portrait style introduced on the teston coinage. The circular Latin legend FRANCISCVS D GRA FRANCORVM REX A runs along the inner border, separated from the bust by a beaded inner circle, with the Nantes mint mark A at the close of the legend.
