| Obverse description | Crowned and draped bust of Francis I in right profile, wearing a crown adorned with fleurs-de-lis and a jewelled band, with armor visible at the shoulder. The effigy is rendered in a Renaissance portrait style, with fine detail in the facial features, hair, and decorative collar. At the base of the bust, a small shield bearing the royal arms of France is visible. The legend FRANCISCVS DEI G FRANCOR REX M runs around the periphery within a beaded inner circle, with the mint mark M denoting Marseille. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, as is characteristic of hammered coinage of this period. |
