Obverse description Draped and crowned bust of Francis I facing right, rendered in high relief in the Renaissance portrait style, with fine engraving of the king's hair falling to the shoulder and elaborate floral crown above. The effigy is set within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential legend in Latin capital letters reads FRANCISCVS DEI GRA FRANCORV REX, separated from the portrait by a raised inner border.

Reverse description The royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — displayed within an ornate polylobe or multilobed cartouche, surmounted by a large fleurs-de-lis-decorated royal crown. The shield and cartouche are finely engraved in the Gothic tradition. The circumferential legend XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPER encircles the design within a beaded border, with dot stops separating the three phrases.
