| Reverse description | The royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by a royal crown occupies the centre of the field. Flanking the shield to left and right are two crowned royal cyphers in the form of the letter C, each surmounted by a small crown, serving as the monogram of Charles IX. The mint mark Y appears at the base of the shield. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design, with the date MDLXII rendered in Roman numerals forming part of the legend. |

Charles IX was thirteen years old when this teston was struck, with Catherine de Medici exercising effective regency. The year 1562 is significant: the Massacre of Vassy occurred in March, triggering the first of the French Wars of Religion. Coin production continued across royal mints despite the immediate collapse of civil order, though output figures varied sharply by mint as Huguenot and Catholic forces alternately threatened supply routes and personnel.
The Dy royales reference gap (listed as "–") suggests this specific mint variant remains unplaced in that corpus.
